Is using a gasket sealent ok on an OHV lawnmower gasket?

I just put a kind of gasket sealant that comes out of a tube on the OHV cover on my lawnmower. The reason I did this was because the old gasket was also the type that came out of a tube but was leaking badly. I just cleaned it of and squished it together and now its curing. The motor I put it on was a Kohler CV12.5s.
